Week 3

Orbit a building with one hand

Pinch and drag and the model turns. A fist works as a clutch, two hands zoom, pan and turn, and a flick lets the view coast to a stop.

In this clip

  • One-hand orbit: drag right to spin, drag down to look from higher, held between 5° and 89° above ground so the building never flips
  • The fist clutch: close your hand mid-drag, move it back, pinch again and keep turning
  • Two hands: move apart to zoom, slide together to pan, rotate like a dial to turn the view
  • The flick: let go while moving and the view coasts to a stop. Pinch again to catch it
  • Hover a wall to light it up, pinch and release to select it
  • Gesture to render shown live in the status bar, target under 50 ms

With a mouse and keyboard we were limited to one strict form of input. Free of the keyboard, our hands guide the UI, and that is where an autonomous modelling environment can flourish.

Hand tracking has a problem a mouse doesn’t: your arms run out of room. The clutch and the flick solve it, and resting your elbows on the desk keeps your shoulders fresh.

Thanks to Mehrnaz Arshad for helping create the models used to test and validate the system.
